The rich symbolism of the Autumnal Equinox in California

I write this extended note to my audience from Pasadena, California. I witnessed the turn of the season with my romantic partner in an outdoor shopping plaza under a blue sky in the late afternoon. We sat outside and I calmly listened to the gentle lapping of a water fountain. There was a strong yet gentle breeze blowing over my shoulders. For a moment I checked the clock and saw there were 35 minutes left of summer. I couldn’t be more content. At around 8:20 pm the moon moved from Aquarius into Pisces.

Autumn brings to mind students going back to school, the gateway to spooky season, sweaters and windy weather. It’s cozy, it’s homely, it’s familiar yet there’s a hint of mystery and allure. All in all, there is a sense of exchange among people and interconnectedness with nature. After a long summer, it’s so enriching to get back in touch with the foods and feeling of fall. Of course, many are excited about the pumpkin spice, pecan, and caramel flavors in our coffee and ice cream. At the grocer we notice fine apples, charming pumpkins, squash, yams, and hams. As for me, I’ve been indulging in eating peppers, roasting yams, and snacking on cheese-stuffed mushrooms.

At this time, the waxing gibbous moon starts in the detached and forward-thinking sign of the water-bearer, giving a sense of thoughtfulness and a forlorn quality. Aquarius is intellectual but we do have an emotional tone of freedom in this moment as we accept the invitation to see things as they are, without compromise, without bargaining, and without fear of calling things as they are. Additionally, Mars is moving retrograde through the last parts of Cancer and may trigger radical acceptance leading to emotional rifts. I, myself, had a bit of a crying spell.

The year 2026 has been significant. 2025 was a little rough: my lack of discipline resulted in a lot of stress which I definitely avoided this time around the sun. And since I bettered myself this time around life has been so rewarding and expansive. Yes, 2026 has been quite dynamic and exceptional. A very special year. I hope my readers experienced goodness in the greater part of the year. Specifically, I have been able to experience refinement, novelty, and discovery.

This leads us to my favorite topic: Libra season.

It’s one of my most favorite times of year. It’s an ideal time for harmony, balance, and beauty. Goddess smiles upon what we have created and where our hearts desire to carry last winter’s refinement, spring’s novelty, and summer’s discovery. She shows us how our hard work manifests, how it looks and feels through the earth. The loyal love of our creator never fails to keep the seasons on beat and the signals of change (such as the changing colors of the leaves, the geese migrating across the morning sky, the yielding and slowing rush of summer) all tell our bodies that fall is here.

(Even the two-day flu makes our bodies submit to the seasonal shift. I’m still recovering from my illness and I recommend adding a dash of cayenne pepper to lemon ginger tea.)

It’s as if you can feel Libra’s scales move between each domain of your life measuring what’s happening, what’s next, what’s necessary? What are all the pros and cons of each pro and con, do we want this or that…And does anything get done?—no, we need more time to decide. In the end everything must be fair.

And that’s the charm of Autumn. It keeps us mindful of the spiritual value of impermanence. Home and belonging are hallmarks of the season yet we witness nature surrender, shift, and decay. Home and relationships bring us security at a time where we reap our harvest and accept what is lost. Impermanence teaches us that change and death are important in the cycle of the wheel of time. And so, we pursue harmony and love because it anchors us in this time of change. We surrender to it.

A season of surrender

I love how this time of year highlights restoration and beauty. Summer gives a lot of outward facing movement. We’re going out to the beach, out to travel abroad and taking day trips, connecting with friends and family. We’re reaching out to connect and expanding our reach and our budget for new experiences, we’re building on what’s already familiar. Leo shines where we’re celebrating and showing off. And then! The year brings in a scorching transition in August and after three weeks temperatures finally decrease and the windy afternoons start to come in and we land right here: the gateway to fall.

Now we settle, mature, come home.

As for me, I’m restoring my money, health, and energy. I’m particular about my resources and tools that keep me aligned; we all need to master the practice of sustenance and know how to fortify our soul both inside and out. I’m also approaching my connections in a new light as well. Perhaps radical acceptance comes with a sting but Libra zooms out to see the whole picture. No matter what form change comes in to you, have faith and stay safe. You need to show love to yourself by nourishing your health and keeping things in order. Afterall, Venus graces the air this time of year.

The harvest moon will be seen in California on September 26th at 9:49 AM. It’s good to know that since it’s the very beginning of fall, we’ll have extended night light from the moon. It would be a great opportunity to moon bathe in an open natural space to receive intuitive guidance or to be in your own lovely company. Aries has a lot of youthful symbolism associated with action so trust that where you are is where you need to be. Have courage and move forward.

Have a beautiful, bountiful, rich and hearty autumn, everyone!
